The Rising Threat of Romance Scams in Japan

Romance Scams in Japan

Introduction

In recent years, romance scams in Japan has witnessed a disturbing increase, where individuals are deceived through online platforms, leading to financial and emotional loss. According to the National Police Agency, the number of romance scams reported in the first 11 months of the year reached 3,326 cases, more than double the figures reported during the same period in the previous year. This alarming rise in incidents has drawn significant attention to the tactics used by scammers and the growing need for awareness and vigilance.

 What Are Romance Scams?

Romance scams in Japan involve fraudulent individuals who pose as potential romantic partners to deceive victims into sending them money or personal information. These scams typically take place on dating apps, social media platforms, or online forums. The scammer usually builds a relationship with the victim, gaining their trust over time, before eventually fabricating a crisis or emergency that requires financial assistance. These schemes often target vulnerable people, especially those seeking companionship or emotional connection.

The Growing Trend of Romance Scams in Japan

Japan has long been known for its respect for privacy and modesty, but the rise of digital platforms has opened the door to new kinds of fraud. Romance scams have found fertile ground in a nation where many people are engaged in online dating or looking for relationships through virtual spaces. The anonymous nature of the internet provides scammers with a shield, allowing them to manipulate emotions and exploit trust.

According to the National Police Agency (NPA), the sharp increase in romance scam incidents is troubling. As reported, the 3,326 cases in 2024 represent a dramatic rise compared to the same period in 2023. This uptick can be attributed to several factors, including increased reliance on online communication, the popularity of dating apps, and the ongoing pandemic, which pushed more people to seek companionship online.

As the relationship develops, the scammer introduces a fabricated crisis—such as a sudden medical emergency, a financial setback, or a need for travel expenses. The victim, having developed emotional ties, is more likely to respond by sending money or offering personal assistance. In many cases, the scammer may continue to manipulate the victim for months, extracting further money under different pretexts.

BUSAN, SOUTH KOREA – NOVEMBER 05: Shipping containers stacked in the container terminal at Busan Port on November 05, 2021 in Busan, South Korea. Cargo processed at South Korean seaports advanced 8.1 percent in the third quarter of this year as trade gained traction amid the global economic recovery from the pandemic. Handling of export-import cargo surged 8.6 percent on-year to 338.85 million tons in the third quarter, as exports of auto and petrochemicals, and imports of raw materials expanded amid the global recovery. Busan Port, located in the southeast of the Korean peninsula, plays the role of a gateway to the Asian continent in the Pacific Ocean. Also, as the leading port in South Korea, it makes a substantial contribution to Korean economic growth by handling about 75% of container cargo. (Photo by Chung Sung-Jun/Getty Images)

Example: The Case of “Hiroshi” and “Mina”

A particularly shocking case reported by Japanese media involved a woman, referred to only as “Mina,” who was tricked into sending over ¥8 million to a man she met on a popular dating app. Hiroshi, the scammer, initially posed as a successful businessman working in the Middle East. After a few months of building a relationship, he claimed that he was in urgent need of money to cover an unexpected expense. With her emotions running high, Mina believed him and transferred large sums of money.

It wasn’t until she started to question the legitimacy of his requests and asked for more concrete details about his situation that she realized she had been scammed. Police investigations later revealed that “Hiroshi” was a scammer operating out of a country with a history of online fraud, and his real identity was never discovered.

Why Are Romance Scams in Japan So Prevalent?

Several factors contribute to the rise of romance scams in Japan. One major reason is the increasing popularity of online dating apps, which have made it easier for people to find romantic partners without face-to-face interaction. While online dating apps can be a great way to meet new people, they also offer a platform for scammers to operate anonymously and reach a large audience.

Another factor is Japan’s aging population and shrinking family unit, which has led to more older individuals seeking companionship online. These individuals may be more vulnerable to scams, as they may not be as familiar with the dangers of online fraud or may be more desperate for human connection.

Additionally, Japan’s strong cultural emphasis on politeness and respect can make it harder for victims to question or investigate the intentions of someone they are building a relationship with, particularly when the scammer is leveraging emotional manipulation.

The Impact of Romance Scams in Japan

The emotional and financial consequences of romance scams can be devastating. For many victims, the loss of money is just one aspect of the damage. The betrayal of trust can lead to feelings of embarrassment, shame, and loss of self-esteem. In some cases, victims may even suffer from depression or anxiety due to the emotional manipulation they endured.

Beyond individual victims, the rise of romance scams also puts a strain on law enforcement agencies and their resources. Police must investigate these crimes, which often involve complex international networks and require cooperation between different jurisdictions.

Conclusion

Romance scams in Japan are a growing threat that impacts not only the victims but also the broader community. As technology advances, scammers are becoming more sophisticated, making it harder for individuals to recognize fraudulent behavior until it’s too late. However, by staying vigilant, educating the public, and fostering cooperation between law enforcement and online platforms, Japan can curb the spread of these scams and prevent further harm.
